Von Clapp-Trapp. Does he still sing the NF blues?

He said what a lot of people were thinking ...

And unfortunatelyy, his real name was Clapton.

Considering he made his living from the sound of the black African diaspora (ie. the blues) his comments were as bizarre as they were odious. And many people were saying not just thinking what he said in the mid-70s so no need to paint him as some paragon of free speech or the long awaited releaser of the elephant in the drawing room.

What did he say?

I woke up this morning -nargh nargh nargh-nargh-nargh!

And phoned Enoch Powell -nargh nargh nargh-nargh-nargh!

Seriously he did a whole rascist rant on stage about foreigners, wogs, and coons overcrowding Britain. Rock Against Racism was formed as a direct result.

Do we have any foreigners in the audience tonight? If so, please put up your hands. Wogs I mean, I'm looking at you. Where are you? I'm sorry but some fucking wog...Arab grabbed my wife's bum, you know? Surely got to be said, yeah this is what all the fucking foreigners and wogs over here are like, just disgusting, that's just the truth, yeah. So where are you? Well wherever you all are, I think you should all just leave. Not just leave the hall, leave our country. You fucking (indecipherable). I don't want you here, in the room or in my country. Listen to me, man! I think we should vote for Enoch Powell. Enoch's our man. I think Enoch's right, I think we should send them all back. Stop Britain from becoming a black colony. Get the foreigners out. Get the wogs out. Get the coons out. Keep Britain white. I used to be into dope, now I'm into racism. It's much heavier, man. Fucking wogs, man. Fucking Saudis taking over London. Bastard wogs. Britain is becoming overcrowded and Enoch will stop it and send them all back. The black wogs and coons and Arabs and fucking Jamaicans and fucking (indecipherable) don't belong here, we don't want them here. This is England, this is a white country, we don't want any black wogs and coons living here. We need to make clear to them they are not welcome. England is for white people, man. We are a white country. I don't want fucking wogs living next to me with their standards. This is Great Britain, a white country, what is happening to us, for fuck's sake? We need to vote for Enoch Powell, he's a great man, speaking truth. Vote for Enoch, he's our man, he's on our side, he'll look after us. I want all of you here to vote for Enoch, support him, he's on our side. Enoch for Prime Minister! Throw the wogs out! Keep Britain white!

All I'd heard was that he'd said in an NME interview that Powell had a poinn.  Right.  Let's try to defend it.  No, let's not.  And you know damn well my stance on the BNP, Hudley.

Later on, he did admit he'd been a bit of a cunt.

Are there any queers in the theatre tonight?
Get 'em up against the wall. -- 'Gainst the wall!
And that one in the spotlight, he don't look right to me.
Get him up against the wall. -- 'Gainst the wall!
And that one looks Jewish, and that one's a coon.
Who let all this riffraff into the room?
There's one smoking a joint, and another with spots!
If I had my way I'd have all of ya shot.

Clapton & Bowie both made racist remarks, and did the nazi salute thing, things were kicking off on the streets and the anti-nazi league organised a big concert where we all learned to rock along together. At the time I put it down to Clapton being a twat and Bowie being off his face, but I don't know either of them personally, so who knows?

..is an interesting case. On Hunky Dory, for example, Quicksand showcases Bowie's interest, perhaps obsession with Nietzsche and, though he's not mentioned by name, Hitler..a fascinating and fantastic song, with a lot more in it than meets the ear:

I'm closer to the Golden Dawn
Immersed in Crowley's uniform
Of imagery
I'm living in a silent film
Portraying Himmler's sacred realm
Of dream reality
I'm frightened by the total goal
Drawing to the ragged hole
And I ain't got the power anymore
No I ain't got the power anymore

I'm the twisted name on Garbo's eyes
Living proof of Churchill's lies
I'm destiny
I'm torn between the light and dark
Where others see their targets
Divine symmetry
Should I kiss the viper's fang
Or herald loud the death of Man
I'm sinking in the quicksand of my thought
And I ain't got the power anymore

Don't believe in yourself
Don't deceive with belief
Knowledge comes with death's release

I'm not a prophet or a stone age man
Just a mortal with the potential of a superman
I'm living on
I'm tethered to the logic of Homo Sapien
Can't take my eyes from the great salvation
Of bullshit faith
If I don't explain what you ought to know
You can tell me all about it on the next Bardo
I'm sinking in the quicksand of my thought
And I ain't got the power anymore

Don't believe in yourself
Don't deceive with belief
Knowledge comes with death's release

There's interesting discussion of this here: http://www.songmeanings.net/songs/view/3530822107858487404/

There are other sprinklings of Bowie's interest in Fascism and Nietzschean philosophy throughoput his work, In Heroes, in the single Boys Keep Swinging, on Let's Dance.. and so on... the more you look, the more you'll find.

If you want to go conspiracy, then Bowie is a member of a secret order... but that's enough for now...

I saw you out walking down Westbourne Grove
You caught my eye and your arm it rose
It rose in the sky, oh ever so high
But it wasn't, my dear, to wave to me
It was simply to hail a big black taxi
Which you jumped in as fast as you possibly could
Well you know my dear I'm not made of wood
And my name may be Birch dear, but I'm not a tree
And I can see you ignoring me
And I'm beginning to think
though I'm open to sway
Even when we're old and grey
I think you might see me and look the other way
Just like you did only the other day

Who wrote that?
