Have you read Andrew Pepper's 'Pyke' books, Scorps.  Tip-top chuckles with a robust ex-Bow Street runner and now Metropolitan policeman.

By the way me old mucker, have you seen the latest TRUE statistics on crime? Gone up 44% under Labour.

I will try a book by Andrew Pepper, which one do you recommend Don? Is it the one about the Industrial Revolution?

'True' statistics..

Hubris Goat
9 March, 2010 - 16:43

Jack, what are these 'true' statistics? What exactly do they relate to? What is the increase in relation to? Over what period was the data sampled? Who carried out the study?

You see a headline like 44% increase seems to imply a massive rise (that's why journalists and headline writers like them). However, such a figure is irrelevant without a proper context: on what data is this figure based? Is the increase year on year? Since Labour came into power? Does it sample all crime?

I am extremely wary of any booming headline statistic. They are nearly always (I was going to say in 99% of cases) misleading, and usually (of course) suit the agenda of the author. What's the baseline rate, in comparison with other European countries? Can the figure be expressed as a natural frequency - for example - two more out of a thousand people are convicted of a crime than they were 10 years ago? We also have to take into account what constitutes a 'crime' and how that affects the calculation. And of course whether crime reporting is more frequent now, due to different recording and reporting rates.

If we can be apprised of all the relevant facts, we will be able to make a considered judgement.

ta.

44% is an odd number....

I just perused the Home Office data (using the BCS data and police records).

http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/rds/pdfs09/hosb1109chap2.pdf

Look at page 16 for trends, and compare 1997 figures with current (ie. 'this government' vs. previous administration).

All household crime: down 42%

All personal crime: down 41% (including violent crime down 46%)

let alone the PM, is a rare and pleasurable thing. Much as I think Farage is a self-serving cunt, he's far more palatable than the oily slimy smiley Cameron. That cunt really gives me the creeps, along with his toady sub-vampire sidekick George Osbourne.

is lost on me Dave. If I think Farage is a cunt, Cameron is a cunt and Osbourne is a cunt, that makes me a Maggie-lovin' Tory?

He's a dangerous cunt who is one step to the left of the BNP.

The UKIP veiws on Europe and immigration are beneath contempt.

And anyone who thinks Maggie was the best thing ever to happen to this country will never be platable. Even if the Tories are run by Tony Blair v2.

They want us to withdraw from the EU.  I'm with them there.

We withdraw from Europe and become weaker in the same move. If we want to be be seen as an important world power we need to work with our European colleagues, not sit on the outside looking in.
