Interesting that Barton refers to "archaic managers" not picking players as one of the reasons for gay players staying in the closet. I'd say the thought of twenty odd thousand hysterical homophobic and sexually confused unreconstructed males yelling that you're an arse-bandit or whatever was more of a deterence. Barton comes across well in this though.

Sexual preference is a personal thing

..articulate, intelligent, socially aware. The contempt for him, never mind gay players, is enormous among the footballing fan fraternity and the general public, who seem to prefer to condemn rather than forgive, but I'm proud he's a QPR player.

it's a difficult one

we need to have a look at ourselves as fans.our team winning becomes so important that anything we can do to put the opposititon off their game, well, we will resort to to very nasty personal stuff.- have used any perceived weakness in players who play for teams playing against QPR.racism is now pretty much beyond the pale, but as we all know, there  is still work to be done.will I honestly shout poof queer gayboy or whatever at a player who is about to take a penalty against QPR to try to put him off?I hope not,but can't swear to ot.

Thankfully not a hard one, ooer!

I've always loved Rangers fans over all others because of the quality of our catcalls. Maybe I'm deaf or sitting in the wrong seats but I can't remember the last time I heard homophobic chants from our end. The opinions offered on this site alone show that we're rather more considered and intellectual in our abuse than some clubs. Anybody else remember how we ruined David James before half time up at Anfield without a single racist comment. Or the legendary "skid marks on her knickers" chant down at The Dell.

There also has to be a line drawn between personal attacks, which I feel are fair game, given that the recipient has often set themselves up for the fall before coming near us (JT, Terry Fenwick, skid mark girl to name but a few) and attacks on ethnicity and or sexual proclivity, which thankfully seem to be few and far between at the Bush.

Take the player baiting out of the game though and we may as well watch at home from our lazy-non-gender specific-armchairs instead of trying to make a difference.

Was the "call and response" chant (akin to "oh when the r's go marching in"), coming from behind the goal in the lower loft, in about 1978, which lasted throughout the whole game in which rangers were winning about 3-0, until ipswich fought back for a draw. i recall parkesy's disappointment as each goal got through.
