The first race that Cavendish was favourite for is totally strategic. You can't race off on your own and hope to win.

The skill in this race is that he came through the most grueling road race in the world, used a lot to help his friend on the Saturday, and still had the stamina to thrash everyone else. That is skill, endurance, and intelligence. Not many people could do what he did. In fact no British cyclist before this has.
